I have a 248 engine that is missing one roller. I need to replace the whole roller plate. The motor sideplates appear to be riveted together. How do I get the sideplates spread to get a new roller plate installed?
You don't spread them. Just rip out the entire fiber board. It's probably brittle anyway. Order a new SLS-48 pickup assy, transfer the plate to the new pickup (if desired) using 530-40 rivets. Make sure the tabs line up (repros are a little short and require filing). Angle one side in, use pliers to bend the ends into the opposite slots and a large flat blade screwdriver to push the center tab in. Done about 100 over the last 25 years this way.
