Hello,

I recently sent in my Lionel Rio Grande ABA Alco to Lionel for several repairs. After taking the repaired engine out of the box, and placing the engine on the track, the engine is no longer moving (DCS). The exterior lights illuminate, but the headlights do not. When powering the engine conventionally, the headlights do illuminate, but like the DCS, it does not power up and move. On the invoice, Lionel says the engine had been test ran. Does anybody have any suggestions, or am I going to have to send the engine back. (Despite not running properly, the engine was still functioning prior to the repair).

Thanks

You can be assured it has been test ran.  I saw several while there a few weeks ago running and being put through the paces.

That being said, check the PGM/ Run switch to see if it got bumped when the engine was put in the box or when you removed it.

Re-assign the ID.  Lionel will often reset these to work on them.

If you're inclined check under the hood for a board that could of came loose in shipping.

It is quite possible that even when testing in conventional, the engine is seeing the TMCC signal.

I guess I shouldn't assume either Legacy or TMCC is connected to the DCS.  If you have either TMCC or Legacy try running it from those remotes and again it might just need the ID reset.

I keep forgetting the first rule of troubleshooting...don't assume that they've tried some of this stuff.  When he said DCS I assumed he was running TMCC via DCS.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did make sure the switch is under run and not program. I have the Lionel command base connected to the DCS. Like mentioned before, I was able to operate the train via dcs prior to the repair. I ran the train in conventional on a separate layout, so I don't think signal would be the issue. I also attempted to re-add the engine, but will try again.

Thanks

If you also have a TMCC cab-1 remote you can reset the engine I.D. back to 1.

Even without a Cab-1, you can use the DCS Remote to make the engine's TMCC ID# whatever you want it to be by entering: Menu/System/Edit Engine/Edit Address

Then, select the engine and follow instructions regarding the RUN/PROG switch to set the desired TMCC ID#. If you have a copy of The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition, all the details are on pages 38-39.

This and a whole lot more is all in "The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition", now available for purchase as an eBook or a printed book from MTH's web store site! Click on the link below to go to MTH's web page for the book!
