Which alcos are we talking about?
For the 200 series plastic body engines there is part #204-78 which is a metal reinforcement which goes behind the apron to add strength to it!
Jeff Kane sells something that repairs them. www.ttender.com

Maybe try J B Weld, your strongest friend for repairs.

For the 200 series Alco's use the metal support bracket that is available. My photo shows the bracket upside down, the thin edge with the tab on it goes on the bottom.
First I cleaned op the broken edges on the shell with a sanding stick.
I stripped the Santa Fe scheme as my daughter wanted a pink engine.
I used epoxy to attach the support piece.
Then I added a section of 1/2 round plastic stock to the bottom to cover the ugly metal strip at the base. I heated it slightly to bend it into shape.
The next one I do I will grind off the metal tab at the bottom of the support because I don't like the way it looks.
I used modeling putty to fair the ends of the 1/2 round strip into the shell. (Squadron white or green IIRC). Prime and paint.
You can see from the above pics the general steps in the process.
Hope this gives you a place to start and please post your results.

Along with the metal nose support, I have a couple of the replacement pilots available. Train Tender has them also. They glue in to replace broken coupler bars, then paint to match.
