Another alternative is HSL's Lionel Postwar Service Manual (scroll down to the repair manual) which is a scanned searchable archive on CD for your computer. It's basically the same as the Greenberg or Kline books which are scans of the Lionel repair manuals. It has added parts lists and service station bulletins.
HSL is the same guy that scans the Lionel and American Flyer catalogs as well as the disc libraries of old OGR magazines.

I used my MasterCard and a fine gentleman by the name of Adrian Cates at Chesterfield Hobbies in Midlothian. My big issue is, even if I know what's wrong and how to fix it, I can't readily lay my hands immediately on the spare parts.

I have "Greenberg's Operating & Repair Manual" that covers 1970 - 1978.

Copyright of 1978 and written by Stan Shantar

The ISBN # 0-89778-070-1

This book covers these years and then there is Greenberg's "Modern Era" book that covers 1977 - 1992. The ISBN # 0-89778-285-2

Might be able to find it on Amazon or the bay.
