Which would be the best route to follow on this set which is 17 yr old?
The set comes from a friend who only ran it during Christmas then pulled the batery
and stored the set.
Appreciate any input from anyone on this.

Either option will get the job done. 
I put BCRs in all my PS1 & PS2 MTH engines. Never have to remove a body shell again. No more stripped mounting posts, pinched wires, etc.
Thank All for the info. Now all I have to do is look for a BCR vendor as we have none
down here in the deep, deep South....only mud and moccasin's.

The only caveat that I would offer is that certain brands of BCRs may be larger or differently-shaped than the 8.4 volt (9 volt battery footprint) of the battery in the engine's tender. Before purchasing the BCR, it might be worthwhile to remove the tender's shell, and eyeball where the battery is and what may need to be done to accommodate a differently-shaped BCR.
Regardless, make sure to remove and replace the existing battery with a new battery or a BCR before attempting to operate the engine.
