I need to replace the McCoy Bild A Loco motor in my JAD Hiawatha locomotive and instead of replacing it with another "traditional" McCoy Bild A Loco motor, I was thinking of installing an MTH/LCT "contemporary" Bild A Loco motor.  Before I buy one, will a "contemporary" Bild A Loco motor, i.e., the motor used with MTH/LCT Protosound locomotives, be a drop in replacement for the currently installed "traditional" McCoy Bild A Loco motor, i.e., will it fit in the JAD Hiawatha loco or is it too big/tall to fit?

While I am replacing the motor, I thought I would also add a smoke unit and sound card to the JAD Hiawatha engine.  Has anyone done this and if so, any recommendations?

Bob, we may need to clarify terminology before we go too far with this.  If we are talking about open frame universal AC/DC motors and excluding contemporary "can" DC motors, then "conventional" and "traditional" refer to the same thing.  Vintage Standard Gauge Lionel, McCoy, and MTH "Bild A Loco" motors are all drop-in interchangeable with each other; I have swapped out each of these for the other at some point without difficulty.

So I don't know specifically about the JAD Hiawatha, but if it has a McCoy BaL in it now, a new MTH BaL will swap right in.

Oops!  A "senior" moment.  I meant to say "contemporary".  Thanks for bringing that error to my attention.  I have edited my original posting to correct my mistake.
