I am thinking on taking my first try at upgrading my 6-38020 T1 tender by replacing the original sound board with an err sound board. is it fairly easy to do, or should I send it to someone experienced in doing this mod? I am reasonably comfortable with doing mods like "your last battery, constant lighting". I would like to take a crack with this, but do not want to get in over my head.

Since this engine is TMCC, why don’t you look for a Railsounds 5.0 board and do a simple swap out from the railsounds board that’s installed now. No need to modify like you would with the ERR sound board.
theres a list of sounds in this thread.
Well, this will be a bit tricky, it has the IR wireless drawbar. The IR isn't officially supported by ERR, though it may be on the RailSounds board they use. It will be some significant wiring and you'll probably have to make some cables. The fact that the IR connector has been omitted from the ERR board leads me to believe this may not work.
Here's the connection diagram for the RS-Lite board which the ERR board is based on. Note that several plugs are omitted on the ERR version, and the pot connector is replaced by an actual trimpot.
Maybe not the first project you want to tackle.

ok thanks, any idea where I could get the 5.0 board?
wow thanks john. no way could i handle that. sounds like the RS 5.0 board swap would be a better choice. any idea where I could get one?
Is there a 5.0 board? I have the Legacy Lionmaster version with a 6.0 board, but that won't work for you. I don't think there ever was a RS5 or RS5.5 board for a T1-Duplex.
Apparently, if going with the Rail Sounds Lite, you need to call Lionel directly to obtain them from there. You may get lucky and find one on the second hand market. There are many sound options available:

boy john, you got me there. I was following superwarp1's line of thought. if not available, I guess I will look for some other project to try. thanks for your help. sure would have liked to get better sound out of that engine.
Look for a sound board that’s close, like GRJ started you won’t get anything exact from either option
Better sound can be simply better speaker or speakers and a good baffle.
John, do you know if the RS Lite has a 5V power Supply on it? Looks like everything is 3V from the pin out. The older RS Power Supply was a good source for a 5V tapoff and so was that early combination Power Board ERR had. G
I believe it's just a 3V board, don't know why they'd need 5V.
