Today my TIU#4 failed - problem is not fuses. I replaced it with my spare TIU (all are rev L) however I can't access the new TIU and the Remote will not recognize it.  Of course it is still set to TIU #1 as is my existing TIU #1.  Trying the procedure in Part V para 12 of the O Gauge Companion when I get to the EDIT TIU ADDRESS on the remote I'm told to delete one.  I tried deleting TIU 4 and then adding it back in but the remote still will not read it.  What is the correct procedure??

I would count the number of blinks of the tiu when powered up and then change the remote to that number. then I would cycle power on the tiu and count the number of blinks again. if you then  get the remote talking to your tiu change it to 4 and then change your remote setting address to 4 also. then cycle power on the tiu and it should blink 4 times, if so then make sure your remote has been set to 4 for the address . now power up tiu and then remote and it should work unless you have other issues .

Good luck!

Did you get it?      the new  tiu address must be open( available)  before editing.

If you  already have  added tiu  #4, you now can't edit to that address.

Do you also have  Tiu 2 & 3 ? If so you can't edit to those addresses. Leave as is.

You may have to delete tiu#4 as a first move.... A second remote comes in really handy for these type of moves... The tiu/ engine association is not moved if using a spare remote with nothing on it.

Ex. using a reset  spare remote, leave the layout powered down and use an aux power supply or whatever to power the replacement tiu  , edit  address #1 to Tiu address #4  ..done..

SUCCESS! Thank all of you for your replies.  This morning after reading them I disconnected the subject TIU's power supplies and used an extension cord to a wall socket so I could power up that TIU only.  I took another Remote and deleted TIU #4 from it after a READ which reported connecting only to TIU #1. I changed TIU #1 to TIU #4. After reconnecting the TIU #4 power supplies to the layout power everything booted up normally and WORKED. If I'd only known about the 5 TIU limit in the Remote and the spare TIU was being used on my separate test track I should have done this before having to several times crawl under my layout on a creeper to dismount the old TIU #4 and remount the new one.  Plenty of my joints are still complaining.  THANKS AGAIN>

Asa a tip for those with this problem.  When using Barry's second suggestion, another remote.  Back up the remote to a computer, then reset it to clear all data, as Gregg suggests.  Then apply Barry's suggestion, by adding the new remote and then changing its address.  The reset the remote again and restore the remote from the computer
