I ran across MD Whistles' youtube channel surfing around. This may not be anything new but,at any rate its fun to hear the replicas of steam whistles that echo lost locos. I wonder if any of these whistles made their way onto O-guage soundsets?

MD Whistles are great! Their Southern 6 Chime is used on Rick Corman's QJ and their replica of 4501's whistle is a near dead ringer! Love their stuff.
None of my MTH or Lionel NYC engines sound like that. Time for both to redo their sound sets.

It sure seems like theres no excuse that any O-guage loco should at the very least have a great sounding prototypical whistle. Having said, that theres a NYC 5 chime on there as well and it sounds fairly similar to the VL hudson whistle.
There WAS a video of the MTH sound crew at Cass (or some other RR) recording MD Whistles for sounds in the trains. One of them, which is mentioned in the Youtube comments as being recorded for a Toy Train Manufacturer, sounds quite like the whistle used on, for example, the recent MTH Premier Camelback 4-6-0.
You're right that the NYC 5 sound like the VL Hudson's (or vice versa) is that what they had? What about Mohawks and Berkshires and Mikados?
I'd love to know, and buy one of these from MD!
Thanks,
Mario
For anyone interested, here is their website.
And a couple of other good whistle sites.

So, from what I can tell, the NYC Hudsons used the 6-chime and Mohawks, Mikados (and Lionel's F-12e ten-wheelers) used the 5-chime?
Is there a reference page for which locomotive types had which whistles?
Thank you all, this is pretty cool...

They should capture the EBT's 14 (Or was it 17?) whistle. Same for Strasburg as well.

The only "capturing" of 17's whistle that should be done is to shoot it and put it out of its misery. That's the whistle that breaks into this banshee wail. Very unmistakable, but not what you would want to subject human ears to.

The one whistle that I'd love to hear properly duplicated is the one from N&W 382 that Link recorded on the Abingdon Branch in the 50s. It was saved and given to Lee Alley of Bristol, VA. It's been around a couple of times on 587 at the NRHS Asheville convention in '89 for the Bulls Gap trip, and more recently on the 475 at Strasburg for a photo charter (even though they didn't get it sounding quite right for some strange reason). With the passing of Mr. Alley this year, I'm not sure what's happened to the whistle. There's a replica at Strasburg, but it's a bit off.
Here's the real whistle at 7:39 on the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65bi9YKxyuo
The L&NE whistle on Reading & Northern 425 is a really good one also... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-5NV1uLw-M
