I cooked bacon and eggs on the scoop in 765's firebox many years ago.
It ain't all it's cracked up to be, unless you like gritty eggs.

Yeah, I remember watching a Top Gear episode from years ago, where Jeremy Clarkson discovered the same thing during a race across England on a vintage coal-fired steamer! Apparently the concept is way cooler than the actual result!

We didn't have such issues with SP 4449, being an oil burner.
Then again, since we didn't have any coal scoops, we had to use metal plates.

I just knew you would get in on this one, Jack. 
Poured some uncooked popcorn down the stack once; it worked--popped popcorn started flying out the stack.
Unfortunately, oil smoke isn't a good substitute for butter and salt.
