Reseting Mid 90's TMCC Locomotive with out Command Equipment - No Smoke

It is my understanding, that regardless of the smoke setting in command mode, when it powers up in conventional the smoke unit comes on. The only way to turn it off in conventional is to use the actual smoke switch. If the switch is on, it will smoke.

Manual and service documents do not indicate a smoke switch (unless I missed it):

Joe is correct, conventional fires up the smoke triac by default.  I believe the LCRU turns off the smoke when you're stopped.  I suspect something's broken in your locomotive.

Looks like I'll be removing the shell. I'm extremely familiar with the pre and postwar units - this C&O looks to be based on the 773, but with all the electronics, I doubt I'm going to find this:

The electronics in your 6-18043 C&O Hudson can't be restored/reset, regardless of whether you have a TMCC set-up or not. They contain an LCRU1, which doesn't support software resetting.

No, there isn't a smoke switch on your locomotive.

Yes, the 8306-style smoke units are serviceable. They take a standard 27-ohm resistor, but they're mounted differently inside. Note the way it's mounted when you remove the top portion of the smoke unit.
