Does anyone know what the status is of the Budd Pioneer Zephyr project?  They seemed to be moving along quite well for awhile and then no more word.

They had found an alternative powerpack and had begun work on the Cab and Car restoration.  I had hoped that the project would have been completed by now.

Any information would be appreciated.

Hello Hotwater,

Please excuse the Budd reference, I was going by memory as to builder.  You are right that a Burlington Pioneer Zephyr was restored and placed underground at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry.  However there was another project that someone had started who was attempting to restore at least the Cab and the two cars.  They were completely reworking the cab and were placing donors nameplates on seats in at least one car.   It has been awhile since I last heard about their progress, thus this posting.

Hello Derek,

Thanks for being such a great mind reader!  I know there was something going on regarding bringing this unit back to life, but I couldn't recall all of the particulars.  I'm glad to see that it has moved along significantly since I last read about it a few years back.

Do you know approximately when they may expect to see it run under its own power?

Kazar,

You might want to edit your subject title to correctly reflect the Flying Yankee that you are asking about, and NOT the Burlington Zephyr.

Suggestion taken and acted upon - Thanks!

Except,,,,,,,,,it was NOT a "Burlington" Flying Yankee. The Burlington had the various Zephyrs. You might want to do a search and learn what railroad actually had the Flying Yankee.

I was startled to run across the Flying Yankee sitting alongside US302 in Glen, NH in 1994 while on vacation. The restoration group had made significant progress rehabilitating her thanks to its main benefactor, whose name I cannot recall nor find, as the group website went through an overhaul. Sadly as that gentleman passed away, so did much of the funds.
