I picked up some pretty ratty tinplate cars in a junk bin and I have been trying to get them looking shiny and new again.  Note there is no collector value to this.  I am just trying to get them looking good again.

I have stripped all the paint off the body and frame and repaired some rust spots.  My question is about things like the coupler and some other car fittings that are plated.  If not rusted, they are pretty dull.

Any suggestions on getting the luster back to them?  Is it possible to paint them using a metallic paint after stripping them.

Again, these are in no way meant to be collectible.  They were in a junk pile.  I'd just like to get them looking crisp and shiny again.

Thanks,

Ed

Hi Ed,

you can clean plated parts, as the other gentlemen already stated, or replate them.

Often the plated parts are pitted, or peeling. If they are in a really bad shape, I polish them with a Dremel, or any other mini drill, and a silicon disk. Of course the shine will be different as its the bare metal then, but for the not so collectible or junk items I leave it with that. I wouldn't paint them: whatever you try, metallic paint never looks like the real thing.
