Which kind of reverse unit do you want to install? You can use the Lionel electromechanical E-unit or any number of electronic/solid state units available.
Dallee (www,dallee.com) has compact reverse units that fit tight spaces. Sounds are available, too.
Williams reverse units and new Tru-Blast II sounds are good choices, too.
Thanks guys, do they come with instructions on how to mount and wire?
Yes, but basically you need to determine what type of motor. If this is a DC Can motor than a reverse unit for DC motors would be chosen.
Normally 2 wires power the reverse unit (center Rail pickup and Outside rail/chassis ground). For the DC motors you have 2 basically 2 leads for the motor. Making sure that they are placed so the engine moves in forward at the start, and that a dual motor unit is wired so the motors turn together. G

Never personally dealt with Dallee - but they've been around for years; I am sure that if you call them and describe your GG1 with it's shell removed they will tell you what you need and offer some advice.
All Williams GG1's came/come with DC can motors (they look like little cans, usually aluminum in color) - as does almost anything Williams has ever offered, BUT:
Back in the old days (1970's) when Williams was getting started, they offered
kits and such (not real familiar with them) that were designed to use old Lionel
AC motors, I believe. Not sure about the GG1.
Anyway, take the shell off (4 or so screws, I would think), take a look, call Dallee
and discuss it. I guarantee that instructions are included with the kits.

The only offering like this was the GE E-60:
Not sure about the GG1...
They have DC can motors. You can use the Lionel electromechanical E-unit with a bridge rectifier for reversing.
You can also order electronic E-units from Bachman, right from the website.
I picked up a Williams GG1 on the cheap and put the chassis and motors from it in the TCA GG1. It now pulls all of the cars quite nicely, including the add on's.
Makes a nice looking outfit.

Thank-you all for your help. I think I should be all set now.
Thanks again.
