Lionel 6-9113 N&W 4 bay hopper

This model is a very basic O-27 4 bay hopper that was issued in 1973. (BLT 3-73) It was produced by Lionel/General Mills Fun Group, Mount Clemens, Michigan. The model has plastic trucks.  Stamped metal pieces were provided for attaching the trucks. Although this same hopper was issued as a covered hopper with opening hatches apparently this car had no cover.

Later versions of this model had plastic molded end pieces for attaching the trucks which were used as a means of reducing cost of manufacturing the product.

Note: This model will be upgraded with sprung metal trucks.

Photos show the original hopper.

No question on the value of the change in the trucks.  MPC's decision to switch from the postwar-derived plastic AAR trucks to those completely obscure Symington-Wayne trucks starting around '71 / '72 is beyond comprehension.  Their only saving grace IMHO was the fact they were made of Delrin (engineering) plastic that combined with fast-angle wheels & needlepoint bearings made them roll very smooth compared to postwar.

That car was a remake of the postwar 6446 4-bay covered hopper although this remake came without a cover therefore the spreader bar.  It’s not an easy car to find as it came in the 1973 CP Service Station Special Set.  I don’t believe it was ever included in any other set or cataloged for separate sale.
