My Kline by Lionel sd70 (K2412-0722HS) just blew a board again while simply idling on the track.    I am looking to replace the guts with an ERR cruise commander and sound commander and have a few question.  I have removed all of the K Line boards and replaced the  lighting with LED's.  I have kept the original ditch lights.  I have tested the lights and they work on 3 volts.   Will the cruise commander board recognize the voltage needed for those lights or do I need to add additional resistors?   Also will the original smoke  unit work with the ERR board?

You will need resistors for LED's, the Cruise Commander puts out half-wave track power (negative going) for command lighting and full-wave track power in conventional mode.

You will not have outputs for the ditch lights, that's not a provision with the Cruise Commander.  However, if you just replace the K-Line Cruise board with the Cruise Commander M, you will have outputs for LED ditch lights from the CC-M.  You also get LED marker/class light outputs with the CC-M

John,

I tired of dealing with the Kline boards and will do the ERR cruise control.   Can I wire both the head lights to the ditch lights to the same source on the board.  In this mode both the head lights and ditch lights will go on in forward.  If so what size resistor should I use and should each light have a sperate resistor?  And can the smoke unit run directly off the cruise board or do I need to change it for a Lionel?

Thanks,

 Marty

Yep, you can wire the ditch lights to the headlight circuit, plenty of capacity for a few LED's.

I'd use a 470 ohm resistor for the headlight, and then wire the ditch lights in series and use a 330 ohm one for those.  If you run conventional at all, toss in a diode to protect them from reverse voltage.  The diode can be at the headlight connection, the anode faces the Cruise Commander headlight connection, all the lights can go through one diode.

K-Line smoke is the same as Lionel, just hook it up and go.
