I certainly need one to represent ACL (and another for SAL), but can't justify the cost   I have hard enough time spending not much more than that on an engine

The recent ACL-SAL Historical Society "Lines South" magazine had an article on the "Watermelon Season".  Seaboard didn't want to deal with them after a while because of all the damage claims they received.  One employee stated that when the melon producers came in to get order forms they picked up a handful of damage reports at the same time!  Seaboard had to hire extras just to do the paperwork.

Nowadays, that would get handled by charging a fee for each form, and another fee for accepting the form, and another fee for processing the form, and.....

Martin, I thought everything these days was suppose to have gone paperless

The article said that shipping melons also caused a burden to the telegraph system because of constantly diverting the melons from one destination to another.

Once TOFC was introduced the damage claims fell off.  The ICC regulated the TOFC rates and the only damages the RRs were responsible for were those caused from a wreck.

In 1913 the ACL had 19524 ventilated Boxcars, the SAL had 14170.  By 1966 the ACL had 14 and the SAL had only 3 (Source - Railway Equipment Registers, Russell Tedder Collection).
