As many of you know, earlier this year I was presented the opportunity by the family of the late Richard Kughn to work with them to sell his personal Lionel Train art collection. Many of the prints and paintings he owned were personal gifts and purchases made from Angela Trotta Thomas. It was Dick who gave Angela the opportunity to become the first Lionel licensed artist, a designation she proudly carries to this day. Angela was always grateful to Dick and his wife Linda for their support, in return she made sure that Dick received print #1 of her latest works. She had them all custom framed for him and many were give small brass plaques with the painting title.

We are under two weeks away from this auction. Personally I am excited and yet sad that this moment has finally come. Sad for the fact that this art collection that Dick has built for many years is being dispersed and excited that a new group of owners will be able to enjoy prints and paintings that adorned his home and office and brought him joy.

Over the next few weeks I'll be posting photos in this thread of some of the 25 pieces that we have from Dicks collection in this auction. If you'd like to see the full auction catalog - Click Here

This auction also has original paintings from other incredibly talented railroad artists from around the country and includes some of Angela's originals that were not a part of Dicks' collection. I'd invite you to take a look at these incredible pieces of art, and if so inclined register to bid with us. As someone who has spent many years filling walls with O gauge trains, I am learning to appreciate art in a new way. I have started filling my upstairs office with prints and originals and what I have found is that this kind of artwork spurs the imagination and the senses in a different way than a layout does. There is a feeling that is captured in artwork that takes us to a time, a place, a memory. These are the very reasons that Dick collected various types of art.

Enjoy the photos and please contact me if you have any questions about the upcoming auction.

Thanks,

Derek

Lot 47: Angela Trotta Thomas, Christmas Memories - Print #1 of 850

This is the painting that started it all. Christmas Memories was one of the five original paintings that were a part of Angela's initial series of Lionel paintings. Ultimately this painting was selected to be the front of the first run of Christmas cards featuring Lionel Trains. This is print #1. It has been professionally framed and includes a small brass plaque with the painting title on the bottom.

This framed print is a part of our June 6, 2020 Railroad Art Auction.

Lot 42 through 45: Angela Trotta Thomas, The Prewar, Standard, Postwar, and Modern Eras - ARTIST PROOF # 1/25 (HERITAGE GICLEE) W/RE-MARQUE, Framed artist proofs, 23" x 34"

One of the really unique offerings in this auction is a group of four artist proofs, each offered individually. Angela painted these to represent each era of Lionel. Each painted from the same perspective, what makes them unique is that as the trains change eras so does the scenery around them. Personally, I believe these look best as a group, but they could also be displayed individually.

In this video you can see ALL of Angela's work that will be included in this sale. If you have not taken a look at the catalog yet, I encourage you to do so. It appears that there are going to be some opportunities to pick up some very nice art at very reasonable prices. Catalog link is in the top post.

PS the date at the end of the video says April 18th is the sale date. This was posted before Covid bumped us to a June 6th sale date.

Thanks,

Derek
