The Heber Valley Historic Railroad, Heber City, UT runs on the former Provo Canyon Branch of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad. The line was saved for tourist use and opened in 1970. It runs today year-round, with three-hour round trips to Vivian Park and shorter trips to the Deer Creek Reservoir. The train was known as the "Heber Creeper" in the 1970's and 1980's. Today's named trains are the Provo Canyon Limited and the Soldier Hollow Express. We rode one of these evening runs on Monday, September 21.
We were among the first to arrive, and had a chance to look around the depot, yards, and even got a special tour of the steam restoration facility. Two 1907 Baldwin 2-8-0s are undergoing total rebuilding, expected to keep them running for the next 30 years.
