In the age of steam what was the job of the "Road Foreman of Engines"? Did he select motive power and make job assignments? Was this a promotion from engineer? Did he have disciplinary powers?

How did the job of "Trainmaster" compare with "Road foreman of engines"? Was there an overlap of authority?

Thanx.

He "supervised" all the Engineers & Firemen.

No. That would have been handled by the Motive Power Department, per the requirements of the Yard Masters, and Chief Dispatchers.

Yes.

Did he have disciplinary powers?

Yes.

The Trainmaster was the "supervisor" of the Conductors, Brakemen, and Flagmen.

Was there an overlap of authority?

Not really, as they both had to work together.

Thanx.
