Roller Stand / Track Shelf for Whole Train?

Wanna' do it the easy way?

Put a piece of track on the shelf in question and power it.  Put four screws between the ties  under the locomotive to suspend it about 1/16" above the rails.  Hidden out of sight, run a ground wire to the frame for the outside rails.

My York display for my Super-Chuffer demo is done that way, the engine looks like it's on the rail, and you can run it like you normally would, it just doesn't go anywhere.

John,  that's a great idea and what a simple solution to get some action on a shelf .    I think I'm going to try it on my little shelf.

I actually saw this first at York a few years back, several of the vendors selling large scale stuff had that arrangement.  I figured it was a cool idea for my display, and it worked out really well.  More than one person actually looked closely and asked how I did it.
