Where is this engine now? It was in running condition in 1981. What is the plan for its future?

I can't speak to the whereabouts of this particular engine, but in the summer of 2000 I was lucky enough to looking out my office window (overlooking the Rutherford, PA NS yard) when a special train passed by. Just after the locomotive, there were three flat cars. On the first was a locomotive, the second carried a tender, and the third had a coach. I found out after the fact that they were a CP Royal Hudson headed to the West Coast to become part of a static display.
Maybe that was the engine in question.

Yes, that was the 2839, and as mentioned below, it's at the Nethercutt Collection museum in California. Don't expect it to ever run again, sadly.

It pains me that the Royal Hudson is not under the shed and protected from the elements.
