I have been using RR-Track for years. It is a great program and I love it. I recently bought a new computer. It does not have a CD drive. I would buy a new version of the program but they do not seem to offer a download. Does anyone have a solution for this? I wrote to them a few days ago but have not heard back.

Using your old computer insert the CD into the drive and copy all the files.   Insert a memory stick with enough space to hold the files and paste the files to the memory stick.  Then insert the memory stick into your new computer and select and run the EXE set-up file.  It should load to the new computer.

The old computer stopped working. I have a Carbonite backup of the data files but not the program files.

External Hard Drive. I had the same problem with other software

I had so much on CDs I finally got a cheap external CD/DVD player.  It took a while to download all the track updates from RR-Track's website, and it seems to crash more now on the new computer.  Still, I have had RR-Track a long time and wanted to keep using it.

All copies of RR-Track are shipped on CDROM.

Thus, the program requires the Program's CD and the unique serial number.

I don't think you can just copy the "program" files to a memory stick and download to your PC.

Fyi - when running the setup EXE file you are prompted for the unique code printed on the CD label.  They are not like license codes (used for MS Office) in that the code is reusable - I installed my version on two separate computers over the years.   While I didn't use the process described for RRTrack I did use it to put MS Office on my new computer without issue (which requires a license code - I was out and just bought one on ebay from someone selling their extras).  Again, you are prompted to enter the applicable codes and if you do so, the program will load, if not, then no, you can't load the program.

RR Track does not need the original CD to install, as long as you've copied the entire contents of the CD, as-is, to some other media (USB stick, portable hard drive, network drive, etc.) Your key code is yours specifically, and it's needed to make the software run once it's installed. It will install without that code, but it won't run without it.

US copyright law allows you to make a backup copy of the CD to another disk or other media -- for your personal use alone -- so copying it to another type of media to make it possible to install to your new computer is legal and acceptable. That copy just has to stay with you, and it's just for your use only.

The software license document on my CD also states that you may install it on more than one computer that you own -- but you may only use it (run it) on one computer at a time. So I may install it on both my desktop upstairs and also on the laptop that I'm taking down to the train room to have with me while I work on the layout... And/or on another computer that stays in the train room. But only one of those installs can be up and running at any time to be compliant. (Strictly speaking, it's not multi-user software anyway, and you wouldn't want multiple instances attempting to change the same file at the same time!)
