Rudolph set problem

Every Thanksgiving we get the Rudolph set (Proto 2)out of the attic. This year we are having an issue with it. When we start it up the volume is very low. Raising the volume on the remote has no affect. It appears to runs fine best I can tell. We left it on the track charging for 6 hours and it didn’t make a difference. After trying factory resets I am getting a Maintance Required message. Is this just an old battery that won’t recharge or is there something more going on here?
