I wanted to point out a wonderful article in the latest issue (Vol. 50, No. 1) of The Keystone (a publication of the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical & Historical Society).  "Called for Train 519" describes the experience of an engineer running a PRR N2sa (2-10-2) in passenger service.  Intriguing, isn't it?  I truly enjoyed the article, learned from it, and recommend it.  I think the real steam locomotive engineers on the forum will relate to it and perhaps give us some more fascinating insights.
