imageimageimageimageWe built a fold down layout for my future stepson. I went with Lionel fast track with 036 curves. Keeping it simple starting out. I posted a topic on the table in the layout section.

I had to take a step back and let him do the measuring, cutting, and nailing.

That is a great idea for using space efficiently! Good for you for letting him help to build it, too! I think kids learn to appreciate things more when they have a personal investment in them. I can imagine him setting up temporary scenes on his layout with his other toys. He is a lucky kid!

How will he reach the train if it derails on the far side?

I see a lot of layouts where trains are up high near edges, and I wonder why there are not more accidents. Has that been a problem?

Great question. The reason there isn't a center support yet is because we are going to cut an opening in the middle so he can sit on his bed in the middle to run his empire. Once that is cut we will add supports to the opening and access will be available. Right now I can reach across the table.

I love the idea of cutting a hole in the middle so he can operate the train while sitting on his bed. I hope you'll post more pictures after doing that.

It sounds like solid and level are two of the keys to avoiding high layout accidents, but I suspect experience at the controls and a mindful approach help, too!
