I was in the process of adding crewmen to each of my locomotives that did not have them, which was going well until I came to my Rail King Alco FA's. It appears there is just not enough room to add the crewmen to the powered loco without the motor knocking into them. It worked fine in my PA's but those seem a bit roomier than the FA's.

So, if I added the crewmen to the very roomy dummy A unit and ran the pair in reverse would there be any issues in relation to the motor? I like having the crewmen, but I like having an operating locomotive better. So, if it's harmful to the engine I defintely don't want to do it.

Thanks in advance.

Shouldn't cause any problem at all.  In fact, that might be seen as the preferable way to operate A-A units since it kind of "shares the load" a bit better.  Lots of folks operate their postwar and other conventional trains in this configuration.

Good call Allan; I remember reading "something Lionel" where they actually recommended running the A-A this way, the powered unit pushing the unpowered one.

The reason Lionel made that recommendation was because Lionel put the electrocouplers on the powered unit so there was no way to uncouple the train using TMCC without running the powered A unit in reverse.

Didn't mean to raise such a ruckus. I have always run my consist this way, both AA and ABA and have never had a problem. I have had many cases where a friend was having trouble pulling a train until I had him reverse the engine order. The SMALL added traction was enough to allow the engine to pull the train without any trouble. Yes they are more unstable that way but I haven't had any problems. Most dummy A and B units are heavy enought that they will not easily jump the track. Of course if you go through an open switch or something the train will not stop because the powered unit will keep pushing until the set shorts out the power but that is the price you pay.

This was on my postwar 2343 set ...
