I bought a nice Lion Chief train from a forum member. Ir is a 0-8-0 Engine # 421.
It runs around my smaller layout just fine at around 7 Volts. Am I hurting it at that voltage? Should I increase the voltage to 16 or 18?

Hi Larry: I am on a large layout and I run five LionChief Plus locomotives. Have four main lines with one Lionel Power House Brick per main line. Power House Brick = 6-22983 / 10 Amp / 180 watt / 18 volts. Below is a volt check under a load with the MTH DCS Wi-Fi on an iPhone.
I also get the same results with a Craftsman's Digital Multi Meter. This is what works on my layout but you may want to hit up Lionel with an e-mail and ask your question.

Hope this helps: Gary
As long as you're not pulling a heavy load, 7 volts should be fine. Another reason rubber tires are evil: if you try to pull too many cars the motor could be in a partial stall condition and overheat!
Larry3Rail,
You should be fine, it's not the lower Voltage you worry about, it's anything above 18 that is no good. I run my Toy Maker Santa Express at 12-14V with a couple of extra Christmas Box Cars and an old Heavy Custom Painted Christmas operating Erie Bum Car.

Merry Christmas Larry!

What Size is the board that your layout is mounted on? I had a similar idea and am trying to decide what size board to use.
Thanks PRR dave.
Noah Size is 3 ft 3 " X 10 ft 3" plus leg of 3 ft 3" X 3 ft This is before I changed to K-line 0-31 Snap Track. Hope
Noah,
That is the formal living room layout, it's only 4x6 with a small RealTrax Loop.

I have been running my LC+ diesel switcher at less than the minimum voltage on my Christmas layout because it’s sharing the layout with an MTH Camelback. The Camelback takes off like a rocket at the minimum LC+ setting.
The only performance issue i’ve seen with the LC+ is the remote command to open the coupler won’t open it at the lower voltage. I have to boost the voltage to get it to open. I don’t use the smoke feature on this loco but I suspect that won’t work very well either.
