Running trains again with DCS

I have not run my layout at all in well over three years for various reasons work etc. I am now retired and looking to get it back up to speed. I have 4.10 and older tiu's last loaded to 4.10. I know I need to upgrade this and I know they say the remote is going away. I have no smart phone or tablet just a personal computer(laptop) can I upgrade my layout and run trains from my laptop like say an engineer would in the cab. I already have an app that lets me run my trains that have tmcc and I also have lionel legacy. I have not kept up with all the changes so I am looking to get back up to speed. My layout is large and can run 5 30 car trains at one time. I have Barry's first book and know I need to go to the latest. Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

I don't see why you have to upgrade, unless you are having a problem an upgrade will cure.

What I am asking is can I run trains with my laptop, what do I need to do this , i do not have a smart phone or a tablet nor do I want to buy one. If i did get a tablet which one ? so i am looking for ideas or suggestions, or just tear the whole thing down and sell it all.

If your going with the DCS WIFI than you need 6.0 at least
