hi,wasn't sure weather to list this on this or the tinplate site cause its a tweener,,,anyway,1st ,I never thought they would produce it,for lack of interest, wrong ! 2nd its smaller than I thought, but tinplate size was all over the map anyway,3rd the paint and the look are great.the engine is super super nice prewar style greens, and the cars colors also,i haven't had a chance to run it yet but will later,,and another surprise is the box it came in,i hope they make some add on freight cars and passenger cars would be nice

Terry,
Looks real nice......good luck with it.......how about a video?

Is this the one that is plastic made to look Tinplate?
yes it is jim,but the loco is metal, I think its a sweet set tho
Looks very nice, Terry. Enjoy it!!!
I was on the fence about this set... and I still am. If it were a passenger set, I would more likely to have been sold. Perhaps what I found most objectionable was this set having ONLY two freight cars plus the caboose. I mean, really... could Lionel have done anything less and still call this a set??? It's just yet another example of Lionel putting a premium price tag on things, and delivering less in terms of product bang for our buck. Yes... I realize I sound like a broken record, but the bean-counter management at Lionel just don't get the message either. And until they change their ways, I'm still gonna keep calling them out on asking enthusiasts to pay premium prices while they insist on cutting corners delivering product.
I do like the overall product's concept though. Just wish they could have hit a grand slam and executed on the theme more effectively by offering a passenger set... something that seems more representative of tinplate trains IMHO.

Looks nice, have to see one first
VERY NICE, but definitely a "tweener"!
That S2 would certainly be a LOT less weight to lift than my SG 408E's!
Agree with David in them only supplying 2 freight cars and the caboose.
Shame as it would look rather odd like that on layout puling such a small consist in my opinion.
Now THAT is a nice little set! I was on the fence with this, and wound up buying the "regular" NYC S2. Either way, this is a really nice set. Almost sorry I didn't wait!
Cool set Terry - thanks for posting
Enjoy
Like others, this one caught my eye in the catalog but I put it on the "maybe" list.
Very attractive looking set. It's tempting but my train budget goes on a hiatus Jan 1 pending what may be coming in the new year.
Nice looking set. Still eagerly awaiting mine, but it still has not shipped yet. Thank you for posting the pictures.
Looks like mine should make it across the country by Tuesday. Hmm, some early post war tin passenger cars with knuckle couplers.........
Steve
Have you seen the unrestored S-2 at the Croton/Harmon yard? It's one of the coolest looking things you'll ever see. They used to have it on the side tracks right by Route 9 in Croton, NY. Once you see it in person, you are just hooked. I bought the O gauge version and I've always had a soft spot for 408's (especially in green).

My dealer called and said my set should arrive tomorrow. Unfortunately, it will be around 2 to 3 weeks before I actually pick up the set. I was attracted to this particular set do to the colors, the TinPlate Effect, The die-cast engine, Legacy Control, Swinging Bell, All the sounds, it’s simply cool. There will probably be many dealers selling the cars separately from the engine, but, as the picture in the Lionel Catalog, and the picture on the above package, it’s a colorful set. I do not even have a Clue what I will be Paying for the Set??? My dealer always treats me Fairly. It’s evident some folks prefer passenger cars, rather than freight consist. It’s Impossible to Please Everyone, if they made a passenger set to go with this engine, others would say, it would be better to have a freight set??? Some folks Are Never Happy.....Clearly, There is great interest in this TinPlate Look, Therefore, Lionel should possibly make add on freight cars, and Also, Passenger cars to....Its nice that they made this beautiful set to begin with, it’s going to be a Crowd Pleaser on our Layouts, or Shelves.....Thank You Lionel....I will post pictures in a few weeks, I am anxious to get it.....Happy New Year... Terry Hudson, thanks for starting this thread, beautiful set...
Larry: For over five decades, the NYC S2 class electrics shuttled passenger trains from Grand Central Terminal in NYC to Harmon on Hudson where they would be exchanged for steam or diesel locomotives. They were primarily passenger locos and they operated with third rail pickup shoes. The small pantographs were ONLY used in the tunnels under Grand Central Terminal, when passing over switches. I remember seeing an S2 by the bumper post in GCT once on my lunch break when I worked at the Lincoln Building across 42nd Street, and wondered why those pantographs were so small!
Beautiful! Have fun with it.
Terry,
Right up my alley buddy, I love it. Fantastic work train, just needs a big 84810 Crane Car!

The NYC S2 electrics were the early iconic electric prototypes for the toy versions made by Ives and Lionel. Ives made diecast and tinplate versions in both O and 1 gauges. Incidentally, the S2's had bipolar motors like the equally famous CMStP&P articulated bipolars.
ok ,so I,m not that skilled with legacy ,I only have an old tmcc set,so ,on this new s2 tinplate set,,the books says,,,,you can run it with tmcc, and the pans will move,,,,mine don't,it does run but I don't get horn or bell, I have tried to reset set the loco to #1 with the tmcc remote, still the same,,,is this all I will get with out legacy,i don't want to buy that system just for one set,as I have all dcs, thanks for the help
Terry Terry,
Purchase the Legacy and you will want more Legacy Engines, I speak from experience!
PCRR/Dave
They don’t do Legacy in tin so I do not see a need for it. I do have TMCC on the layout for others to use. Won’t make any difference if I can’t get my S2 to run.
Steve
To each their own on how to operate their new S2, the Pantographs do not function, no uppy/downy Just their For looks. I would highly recommend you at least learn how to run this beauty in TMCC, and better yet move up to the best control on the Planet today, Legacy. It’s a great engine, Lionel hit a home run on this fun to run Diesel.....Congratulations on your purchase...
It has two third rail shoes on each side as per prototype. Those small pantographs only used in GCT tunnels. Nicely detailed loco with swinging bell a plus.
