Picked up a butt ugly Sakai 301 at the train show this weekend. It had two
features hard to find in a 301. The numbers were excellent, but the rest of the
paint was terrible and it had a nice quiet motor. 301's have 2 types of motors,
nice & quiet or rock crushers. There does not seem to be anything in between. I
washed the shell, beat out some of the bent roof, taped off the numbers and
sprayed the shell with Tamiya TS-29 Semi Gloss Black. The paint is a near
perfect match for the original so you would have to look real hard around the
numbers to know it was painted.
Posed it with a Marx wedge tender so you can get a feel for it's small size. A
nice 3/16 2-6-2 that works well with Marx 3/16 scale cars.
