Thought I would post pictures of a train I put together using the K-Line super detailed ATSF ABBBA F-units followed by a string of ATSF Hi-Level passenger cars.  These are the 21" cars that K-Line produced and today are somewhat hard to find...at least at a fair price.  The pictures show the train arriving and then departing the station area....hope you will enjoy and as always I appreciate your comments...

Thanks,

Alan

Absolutely an extraordinary train. Alan, you should keep this train permanently running on your layout. It should not be stored in boxes under the layout. It is too good and rare not be shown to all of your visitors.

Thanks for sharing this with all of us tonight. It is a wonderful treat. I hope that GGD or someone will step up to the plate and manufacture these hi-level cars. There is a market just waiting for them.

Alan

I believe those instructions are from the previous version of the forum software. Nowadays all you need is the URL of the YouTube page where the video plays.

Brian...thanks!  This is the train that you will own someday!  I don't even have all of the cars in it yet.  There is a full dome that on the prototype was replaced with a Hi-Level car that looked very much like a viewliner today.  In addition there is a baggage and a few other single level coachs..

Thanks Dave...

Alex...appreciate you!....I am still playing with the video camera but thanks for the e-mail help!

Roger...thank you!  You never have to invite yourself....just come on down!  You and Louanna always have an open invitation.

Thank you Ed....I agree, the ATSF is one of my favorites and these cars, while not completely prototypical, are very nice.

Charlie...as always, thanks so much and thanks for the instructions.

Thanks Mike...

"drelo"....thank you.  I was very fortunate to acquire these cars back in 2006 when the prices were way below even the MSRP.

"kj356"...WOW, thanks for all of the compliments!

PCJ....I am still experimenting today with the camera but thanks for the video suggestion..  As far as amps, it pulls about 3.  The only reason....I switched off the interior lights only leaving on the markers.  Fortunately, K-Line provided a couple of switches on the bottom of each car so that one could adjust lighting.

Thanks Rick...this one is for you!!  LOL!!

Thank you Spence...

Cincinnati....I appreciate your compliments!

Pete....I love the train too!  I also have the K-Line C&NW commuter Bi-Levels...I will take photos of those next.

Thanks Ken...I will figure out the video software hopefully soon.

Alan,

You just broke my heart...

Picking up these hi-level cars one at time for the past three years, at $250.00 each, my half dozen was a proud fleet until I saw your pictures and now the blow of $60.00 a car...you're killing me.

Seriously, thank you for sharing this and as much as you do, your trains and layout is aspirational to me -- as in someday I want a layout as awesome as Alan's.

Best,
Jason

Beautiful set Alan!  I love those cars.  I have the 10 cars set of the SF single level cars.  I didn't order the bi-levels when they came out since I had a 6 car set of Williams SF bi-level cars.  They're nice but not as nice as the K-Line.  I figured I could pick them up later on at any time, but then K-Line went under.  Once K-Line went out I scrambled to get as many 21" passenger sets that I could find/afford in a short time.  The SF bi-levels got lost in the frenzy, along with the California Zephyr and the UP set. (I did manage to get a 18" UP set though.

I have an ABBA set of the K-Line SF F7 too.  Smooth runner and very nice looking set.

I guess I gotta hope Golden Gate Depot or Atlas will make the SF Bi-level cars!

Alan, you are making us all drool who don't have this set. It is about time that somebody made this set.

As you know, I do however have a substitute K-Line set waiting in the wings that should take some of the pain out of not having the Hi-Levels. Have to finish the renovation work first before this set has it's coming out party.

Beautiful consist. Since I am a fan of the Santa Fe Railway, how could I not like this consist of yours. I just wish I could have bought more of those passenger cars when they were available.

I have placed a suggestion to MTH Electric Trains to see if they can obtain the molds and dies (from Lionel, I believe) and re-produce the same  Time will tell if they can do the same.

Also, instead of the K-Line Streamlighting set-up, use LED Bulbs as I tend to heat-up a Z-4000 transformer when I run my consist.

I do have a video that is on my club's website where I have my Hi-Level consist running, and the website and link are as follows:

1) Type in tmbmodeltrainclub.com

2) Cick on the Video Tab

3) Scroll down to Mike's BNSF and click on the white arrow.

Enjoy the video, and the others to.

Sincerely,

Michael 'Santa Fe Mike' Sudlow

Very nice train Alan, I'm a huge Santa Fe guy, and the Hi-level El Capitan is my favorite. I purchased the K-line 2 pack with the step down and the transition car when Justrains was having a sale on them a few years ago, I think I paid $149.00 for the 2 cars. I bought them to go with the Lionel Hi-level cars, since Lionel never made the step down or transition cars, however, they never did look quite right ahead of the 18" Lionel cars so I auctioned them off on the bay for big $$$$$. I've been hoping that one of the O scale manufactures will produce a complete set of the Budd built Hi-Levels some day, or maybe Lionel can complete ther Hi-level set by producing a step down and transition car. N and HO manufactures have come out with some pretty nice models of the El Cap! So C'mon MTH, Atlas, Lionel

W O W What a beauty!!! The colors on your layout seem to really bring out the beauty and gracsful lines of your K-Line ATSF consist. i AM HAVING TROUBLE WAITING to run some of mypassenger trains. I need to be further along before breaking them out but it hard to wait. Hope I can find some k-line 21" cars some where.

I bet your ATSF would look even more AWESOME with the room lights turned down with city lights on and the consist passing along in front of the city and train terminal. GREAT PICTURES ALAN.

Thanks Bill!!  I bet you are really going to have a hard time finding some passenger cars to run..

As far as the lights, I switched them off in each car because they simply overloaded the Z-4000!!  BUT....as the year goes on, I will be installing lighting on the layout, in the buildings, etc. and then I will post some pictures just for you...my friend the "Enlightened One!!" (that is because I know you love those lights! )

Thanks,

Alan
