This is probably and obvious question - but of the scale sized F3 (or other F unit) diesels available in sets (i.e. AB ABA ABBA) are you able to run one or both of the powered A units as a separate loco without the rest of the packaged set?

For example - if I had an F3 ABA set (all powered) would I be able to run 2 separate trains each headed by an A unit? Or do they only work as a whole.

Does it vary by manufacturer? (Only interested in TMCC or DCS locos for now)

Trying to plan a purchase and this will be a huge factor in deciding whether to get individual A units (e.g. atlas) or MTH Premier or Lionel ABA sets

Tethered MTH engines NO

New MTH PS3 w/o tether, TMCC, Legacy, Atlas, Sunset 3rd Rail... YES

K-Line TMCC A-A and A-B-A all powered only had one controlling unit, so those would not run separately.
