I was able to recently acquire this GG1 from a fellow forum member who is upgrading their GG1s to Legacy.  For me, the JLC PC GG1 is a bit of a grail as these are not easy to find.  This one has been weathered which makes it even nicer in my opinion.  Something I can operate with my JLC PRR 4925.

My only issue is that Lionel used the same number, 4901, that Weaver did for the PC GG1.  Lionel's is more correct with the high filters, but you would think that they could have at least done a different number.

Awesome subject, well done weathering! A great acquisition Jonathan! It’s nice to hear this one came from a Forum member. What menu of consists would be prototypical for PC 4901 over what years?

4901 has an interesting history.  Being one of the newer G's it mostly pulled passenger trains, but any GG1 could be pulling any train on any particular day.  4901 went to Amtrak in the early 1970's and ran for a period in 1974 as "901" where Amtrak just painted out the 4 but didn't change the PC lettering or logo.  By 1975 this motor would be repainted into the black Amtrak Scheme as 901 with the Amtrak Stencil lettering in the Helvetica font.

As such, this road number is ideal for pulling passenger trains from New Haven to DC and serving on east-west trains to Harrisburg.  Early PC would consist of a mixture of PC, PRR, NH, and NYC lettered cars that would later give way to Phase I Amtrak cars.  Any of the north-south through trains from SCL and Southern would be appropriate too.

Aside from a full early Amtrak train, I have cobbled together a faux PC train with all the PC roads represented.  Now the question is do I want to renumber my Weaver one or renumber this one?

I can't take credit for the weathering, but it is certainly well done.

Thanks for sharing more of your knowledge on the GG1 with us Jonathan. It’s exciting to have a scale model of the GG1, but history comes alive even more when it is pulling an authentic consist. You provide authoritative information for going about collecting and assembling an accurate set of cars. From here one can go about hunting photos on the web and better understanding what one is looking at.

I can see in the Lionel 2024 Volume 2 catalog there is a black Penn Central 4908 Vision line GG1. I wonder if the JLC PC 4901 version became available because the previous owner might have a pending upgrade to that model.
