I have bought a few bottles of scented smoke fluid thru the years - and honestly I never find them very fragrant. My wife has never been a fan of the smoking Engine's- mainly because my set sits on the Dining room table this time of year. A bunch of times around the track and to me it still has that oil/plastic scent. I run a 262E modern engine and with no smoke/vapor it is just not the same. Happy Wife Happy...........

Any advise?

I keep having to turn it off when my step-daughter is here for the same reason. I wonder if the vanilla would smell good? I just got a bottle of the "nada" at Niagara Hobby to try anyways. Seems weird to go upstairs and see them buying the vanilla for the little scented heater thing on the wall.

I like MTH's Christmas Tree Scent and JT's Eliminator which is not really a scented smoke fluid (I don't think?), but I like the smell of it.

I run the smoke units until I hear "Do you have that smoke turned on again?" coming down the stairs from above. Naturally, I reply, "No Dear!" and then turn it off. Doesn't always happen though, sometimes I get lucky and don't get caught.

Thanks - My lay out sits dead in the middle of our Downstairs (Dining room) and since my Wife and I have downsized We have no basement. We have a Garage but I'm getting to old to stand in a Cold Room. Hopefully the Nada or Chocolate will do the trick - I don't run the smoke all the time anyway - But I love to see it puff - And one of the main reasons I got back into 3 Rail. Ken

Well my smoke fluids arrived yesterday - Right now the Nada is beating out the Hot chocolate - My Modern 261E really pumps out allot of smoke in a small room even though I have the Pot turned down to minimum. I think any fragrant smoke at all is going to bother the Wifey. But hey thanks to everyone for all the Great advise!

And Bill - I have been in your shop many times and its a Great place to shop.  Ken

To be fair each time I change scents of fluid I change over to a new smoke wick and clean the resovouir good before adding a new smoke fluid so I'll get 100% of the true scent. You can make your own scented fluids using food grade mineral oil from the drugstore and candle scent oil. Anyone who doesn't care about the scent and just wants plumms of smoke can use rc airplane smoke oil like Robarts liquid sky that can be had for 20.00 a gallon.

If you don't know what the flakes are I wouldn't use it, better safe than sorry.

Smoke fluid is relatively inexpensive.

Rusty - I get where you are coming from. At this point I have at least 3 to 4 scents down the stack - So I know I am not getting one true scent. If I can get wifey out of the house for most of the day I can try to burn off most of what is in there. And then start again sticking with one scent only. At this point I am running No Smoke.

Conductor, I'm not sure what the flash point is on food grade mineral oil but I've never had a problem with it in my MTH steamers. If you mix candle scent oil with food grade mineral oil be aware that a few drops of candle scent oil goes a long way.
The rc smoke smokes good and has a very high flash point. We pump it straight into the header pipes of our planes and smoke the field out.

What is the flash point for the mineral oil? How about smoke quality? I recall years ago that some folks burned their trains to the ground using lamp oil (my brother used to use it in his AF engines). The rc airplane smoke is new to me. How about the quality (or quantity?) of the smoke?

Thanks

Mythotto, you would be better off to just change over to a new wick and clean the bowl. Some here use factory wick or tiki torche wick. I use neither. I buy one inch wood stove door gasket from any hardware store. It's woven by several small ropes of gasket material. You can unravel it to have several wicks. I usually just buy a foot at a time for five buck's as this will do fifty to seventy five engines.
As with any wick material you should soak it with smoke oil before handling it to avoid breathing fibers "its like asbestos" then seal it in a zip lock bag. The wood stove door material outlast tiki and factory wick in my experience.

Sure, now you post this. I used to work at a factory that made that stuff!
