Another option would be to get figures in business suits and use small bits of paper soaked in Elmers glue to craft the coat extensions around the waist and upper legs of the figures.  Then after it dries, use some modelling putty to smooth the transition to the figure and when that dries, paint the white areas representing the lab coats.

 

I used to do this back when I was in to military modelling and wanted to add overcoats to figures.

Not weird at all.  It is a breeze to cut off the feet from the base... and you can get these figures for less than a dollar a piece.  Repaint with different hair and pants colors, reposition their arms, or replace their arms from other figures to get different looking figures.
