so, today I cleaned the contact areas on the reverser mechanism of the Scout 2-4-2. This led to the discovery that the reverser doesn’t appear to function reliably, and moving the lever across makes no apparent difference; but if I set the loco on track and it doesn’t go, I can reset the drum manually and it will run in either direction quite happily.

I’m quite pleased about this, because otherwise it runs very well.

First thing to check is any mechanical binding in the e unit. Is everything moving freely? When you apply power does the plunger move or attempt to move?

It also could be an electrical issue. Most common being a wire that came loose and is intermittently making contact.

If the plunger is moving up and down freely with the application of power and the drum isn't turning, that means something is binding. Either the fingers are causing it or the drum itself is not rotating freely.
