Dear forum,

This is me testing the waters about a tentative project. As some of you know I've been putting together a 1945-1949 Exposition Flyer. As part of this endeavor, I have bugged several manufacturers to bring this train to the market with no positive outcome. So, in thinking about one of the most distinctive cars often seen in Expo consists, the Rio Grande 1000 series coach, I got the idea to build it from scratch. I thought this is a good point for me to go from "upgrader"/modifier to builder. I'm confident I've  amassed enough experience and knowledge to make that transition.

So where am I going with this?  Well, since I'm building my own car I could build a few others of the same car at the same time. My question to you is, would anyone be interested in buying this car if I build it? I'm planning for a ready-to-run, all-brass car, with interior details and custom painted and lettered.  Parts would be PSC with a brass scratch-built body, no styrene.

Realistically this would be a 2-3 year project and for the amount of work and level of fidelity I expect to achieve I would charge around $1500 per car.

Let me know what you think.

Any time you start building for others, a project rapidly stops being your hobby and evolves into a  job working for someone else.

I'll second that.  While I don't specifically build for others, having consulted for Sunset for nearly 9 years now, it has taken away some of the joy of the hobby for me.  I still love it and I have learned so much that I wouldn't trade it for anything.  However, I had to find another hobby to relieve stress when things get crazy on the consulting side and I haven't really worked on my own trains much during this time other than running them.

Having stated that, I applaud you for wanting to make this happen.  I'm looking for accurate CNJ commuter coaches which haven't been done in O as far as I can find.  Scratch building them may be my only way to get them one day way down the road.  That, or spot Scott $200,000 for 1,000 cars and build the Communipaw coach yard in an old flight hanger.

Appreciate the input, everyone. I'm aware of the risks of building for others, if I wasn't making one for myself I wouldn't do it. I am, however, very excited about the project. It's a beautiful car!

Jonathan, Scott is making two trains that I could only dream of, the O Hiawatha and the Second Super Chief. There is always a chance.

I'd love to see some early BURLINGTON budd cars, a Silver Dome and a Silver Pendulum. New brass heavies would be lovely too. Chances are low for these cars, but maybe some day?
