While driving along the ex-SP Sunset Route yesterday between Yuma and Tucson, I observed at least a hundred miles of single track still protected by searchlight signals. They're well maintained and have a pole line still in place (1 or 2 cross arms). These are mounted on instrument cases that obviously were originally for lower quadrant semaphores. They merely shortened the masts when they installed CTC and the searchlights.

No telling how much longer they'll be there. They are surely on UPRR's hit list

Good to hear that there are is a large stretch of SP still protected with them.  UP is required to replace them with tri-lens signals for the PTC where Amtrak will be running.  There are fewer than a dozen left on the Nevada and Elko subdivisions.  The Winnemucca sub (ex-WP) still has most of the original signals with a few replaced and relocated.  They are almost all gone on the Tehachipi I hear.
