I remember them. We even sold a few back in the eighties & nineties. Lionel also made locomotives that came with a showcase for Penny's. Our number one seller from these special edition locomotives was the #8272 Pennsylvania EP-5 done in gold and brown. It was  beautiful.  Lionel built a #8104 General that was painted dark green with gold chrome plating. It sold only because people thought it would become a real collectors item. It was spin off of the chrome plated Rock island General in the 1981 catalog. The #8378 Wabash FM (Bluebird) was probably the most desirable piece. The #8587 was a Wabash GP and was another good seller for us. Of these special edition locomotives this engine probably came in second place behind the Pennsy EP-5.

No pertinent Google hits for Sears Silver Shadow, rather Penney Silver Shadow.  Trainz.com has this to say

In 1980, Lionel produced a special 4-6-4 available only through JC Penney. This attractive engine, painted in gray and silver and decorated for the Atlantic Coast Line, featured smoke, magnetraction. Sound of steam, and a whistle. It also included a walnut display board with a plexiglass cover.

This engine is often known as ‘The Silver Shadow’, and it remains one of the more difficult MPC-era steam engines to locate.

I have the Texas and Pacific Mountain (Mohawk) in Eagle colors with a plexiglass case shown by ed h above.  It was catalog by Sears for Christmas in the early nineties.  I bought mine NOS from Henry of Island Trains 4 or 5 years later.

I also have two electric Interurbans in SP Daylight livery with TMCC and cases.  These were cataloged by Penny's for Christmas, probably in the early 2000's.
