Here is a picture of one of the first Christmas cars Lionel produced expressly for Christmas in 1973, long before the 8 catalog pages offered today. It is a dealer appreciation car that Lionel sent to it's larger accounts back in the day. 1 per dealer. The dealer could do as he wished with with. An overstamped in red leaf foil on a rather drab green 9742 M&StL boxcar. The car it's self was a uncatalogued 'coupon car' Where you needed to cut up 2 boxcar boxes with the coupon printed on the side of the box and mail to Lionel. No doubt it was not a very popular car so Lionel was stuck with a bunch of unsold inventory. Perfect for a 'give away' car.

I remember I wanted it pretty badly and the dealer wanted 20.00 for it! That was when a standard boxcar was 5.00. I was a young teenager at the time and had a hard time coming up with 20.00 in 1973. I came up with the money and bought it. Not much demand for that kind of stuff back then. I reality, it's probably not worth that much more in today's market.

Little story to pass along about an obscure car.

Well, well, well; so much for the story I was told when I sought a 1975 "Christmas" car for my family train.  At one point, I had a Christmas car for every child and grandchild except the 1975 birth of my first daughter.  Now, I have finally found the 1975 car and my family set is complete (2 children, 5 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild on the way), but I guess what makes the 1975 "special" is that it may be the first car that was not an "over-stamp."

So, does anyone have a 1974 car and was it also an over-stamp?

Chuck

Hi Larry,

Yes, 1973 was the first Lionel Christmas/Holiday car

Lionel produced a Christmas car for 1973,1974,1975,1976,1977 & 1978 (These were not regular production items, made on a limited basis for dealers)

1973 and 1974 were overstamps on existing cars

From 1979 - 1984, there were no Christmas cars produced

In 1985, a Christmas car was produced (I think only for Lionel employees)

I believe 1986 started the regular production of a Christmas car

Someone please correct me if I am wrong
