i am having a difficult time finding these in sufficient numbers to populate several cars (20-30 figures). anybody got a good source. need to be painted.

Golden Gate Depot has them for sale. I'm not sure they are on the website at the moment, but if you contact them you can order sets.
I use MTH unpainted figures, 120 for $29. About 80 are sitting, the rest standing. These are nicely detailed and small enough to fit 2 to a seat (most train interior seats are a bit on the small size). I have about 20 figures per car.

Do you hand paint all of them yourself?
I use the ones from wehonest got 650 for around 70.00 they are painted.. About 35 to 40% of them are seated. I have got from them several times no problems..
