I hope it is OK to post this here.

I am seeking donations of any engines, rolling stock or transformer(s) that you might have as extras and would be willing to provide so that I can assemble a small train layout to be given away at a model train educational/expereince event geared towards children/young adults that is to be held in my town in Early November 2013.  If you are able to donate anything, I will be glad to pay for postage from your house to mine.

Background on Train Days:

The background to this is that my local library has been hosting an anuual "Train Days" event for several years.  A purpose of this event is to EDUCATE folks, primarily youngsters, in the hobby of model trains.  Basically, to get kids interested.  I will be there, as a relative newbie to the hobby, to answer questions and show kids (and parents) what is is about.  It is not a train show (buy/sell) nor is it anything commercial related.  It is all voluntary and - for the attendees - free.  I plan to have a couple of layouts.

What I Will Use Donated Items For:

I thought it might be fun to have a drawing for a "train set" - something I could cobble together from donations.  My plan is that it would be free to enter the drawing.  The person has to be 18yrs or youger, and the parent or guardian has to OK that the child enters the drawing.  At the end of the day, the winner will be drawn and I will 'deliver' the trains and set it up for the new owner at their home.

The idea here is to get some of the younger folks interested in something other than video games and the stuff on TV. If they come to the train days event, then they probably are interested. So this might be a way to expand that interest.

If you have anything you can donate, please contact me off line (my e-mail is in my profile). I am not limiting this to a particular gauge.  As I get donations I will update the information.  Here are the things I have and the things I think I could use:

Track - have some donated FasTrack and tubular O gauge; other gaugues (or more O) gladly accepted

Engine - need

Rolling stock car #1 - need

Rolling stock car #2 - need

Rolling stock car #3 - need

Caboose - need

Transformer - need

Just as an FYI:

If you want to confirm that this is legit, please feel free to contact the library.  [  As I always say: trust, but verify!    ]

John;

Sounds like a noble idea. I hope it works well.

I can contribute an MTH RTR 2-8-0 in either Patriots or Greenbay colors.

I have them in the for sale forum as 2-8-0 hulks. There are pictures there as well.

Only thing is I need to install a DCRU to get one running, and I have none on hand at present. Your early November timing might be a stretch.

Anyhow, if it fits, you can have one of them for the cause.

John,

How much rolling stock do you want.

I have a bunch of 9 1/4" old Lionel, box, tank and hopper cars.

I can out together a string for you.

Suggestion!

Change the age for drawing to 15 and younger. At 16, cars and girls are more important than trains.

I have Rod's DCRU here in my house sitting and waiting for him. Maybe when he gets here next week, we can put a whole train together for one shipment.

Today was the day and the Damascus Train Day went well.  You may recall I sought some assistance from the "membership" to gather items for the give away train set....

We do not have a winner yet, but 175 entry forms were deposited.  I'll do the 'drawing' tomorrow.

First, I'd like to thank the following members of the forum and my LHS for donating significant resources and time to make this possible:

  • Rod Stewart
  • Hugh Laubis
  • Jim Lawson
  • Al Galli
  • Navy Ben
  • Matt P (a.k.a. SJC)
  • Paul Johnson at Catoctin Mountain Trains and Hobbies (Thurmont, MD).

I actually had about 4 or 5 parents come up and ask me how to get started with a set for their child.  That was encouraging.  One person wanted to donate a whole set for the next Damascus Days event.  Hopefully she does not loose my e-mail address!

Picture are below.

I had 3 loops.  I also took pics of the train I cobbled together from forum members' donations.  And I showed what was left of the original 50+ back issues of model train publications.  There were only 8 left at the end of the day!

Thanks again to all.

Chris - thanks for the endorsement!  The beagle is doing fine and the basset is aging quickly.  Both are - you guessed it - asleep right now.

Rod - yes, the light bulb was merely loose.  The engine ran fine otherwise for 6 hrs.

dpg - feel free to contact me off line.  This is a definite for next year per the organizer, so I will take anything now and hold it and put together a set or two for next year.

I probably should make one thing clear - only because I never explained it before.  The set that was given away was the one on the outside loop - it's the one that has the close up pics.  The middle and inner loops + trains are mine.  Sorry about that missed fact.

I will also do a better job at the event of posting who contributed to the layout and provided the free magazines.  I explained to as many as I could, but if I put it down  in writing (like on a poster) that may have proved more informative.

If anyone wants to donate items now for next year, I WILL GLADLY TAKE IT.  Please contact me via my e-mail in my profile.  To anyone contemplating a donation, I will pay to ship it to me.  I am ideally looking for:  engines, cars, track, power supplies.  Will be happy to also take books, magazines, scenery/accessories.  Does NOT need to be O Gauge.  Any sized gauge is good.  I will ensure the proper sized hands are given the correct scale for play!

If it's broken, I will still take it.  I have an excellent and generous resource (he knows who he is!) that can be called upon to do repair work.  And if it can't be fixed, it may become donor parts for another item to then get something operating.

I delivered the set to the recipient on Monday evening.  It was an 11 year old boy and an 8 year old girl.  Both seemed excited to have the set.

I assembled everything, did a demo of the functions, went over some basic safety advice and gave them my number - if they had any questions.  Hopefully we have one more in the fold now.  Both grandfathers have layouts, but are not local, so this is good and it will allow both children to get some free train advice from their family elders.

Thanks again to all who contributed to the cause and to those that have expressed interest in the next one.
