A few weeks back, I found myself wandering around in the area of Orleans, Indiana and was quite pleasantly surprised to see a couple of semaphores still standing.

A little bit of Google research revealed that this is part of the former Monon line, and was active as recently as 2009 although there is no current active service here. Google Earth shows cars stored along this track, including near where I picture below, although I was too distracted by the signal itself to notice.

Although these are not currently in service, it was exciting for me to see these 100-year old installations still in place and not that long out of service.

I apologize for the poor quality of the photo, as it was taken with my Iphone through a car window. I will try to make it back up that way with a better camera at some point.

Mitchell, In.  is the home of the Carpenter school bus factory.   Still in production as far as I know.   Mitchell is famous as the home of Gus Grissom.   It is 50 miles or so north of Orleans.  That's a guess on my part.   Both towns are in southern, In., not to far from me.

Being we all like "old" stuff on this forum, I got a great job at Mitchell a few years ago.   An older guy, 90's that lived there had collected/hoarded old cars all his life.  When he died, his son just wanted everything gone.   A friend of my was related and was the auctioneer.  I got the job of listing and cataloging everything there.   There were over 150 old cars from the 30's.   Most had been outside all those years, but even rusted pretty bad it was great fun poking around there for a week.
