Servicing info resources for 1970-2000 Lionel?

Lionel has their entire Modern Era service manual available online. You can download it.  Here is a link: Service manual.

Does this mean that Lionel is the source for repair parts for Modern Era trains going back to the early '80's? I notice most of the parts vendors carry primarily post-war parts.

No. Lionel sold off their stock of old parts a number of years ago. They clean out old stock parts periodically.
There are many Lionel parts dealers who have a combination of old stock and reproduction parts. Folks will probably post links to their favorite dealers. I use several.

No. Lionel sold off their stock of old parts a number of years ago. They clean out old stock parts periodically.

I was able to find postwar train info here but was unable to find MPC-era data. Example: #3100 Gt. Northern 4-8-4 locomotive. I must not be looking in the right place?

Olsens does not have Modern era information.

Not sure what the problems are, but the information for both of your locomotives can be found on Lionel's support website.

The innards of most of these engines are very similar to postwar Lionels. Once you have the parts lists (the service supplements from lionel.com), you will be able to figure it out. In fact, you will find that the MPC and LTI engines use many postwar parts. Your northern is just a gussied-up 736 berkshire. The 1990 scale hudson has a lot more detail than the postwar versions, but on the inside, it's basically the 785 hudson, and that was derived from the postwar 773. The main difference between your engines and the postwar ones is the additional wiring for their sound systems - take pictures of the wiring when you are taking them apart and you will be fine when it comes time to put them back together.

I love that 3100 Great Northern!  It was the first engine that I actually bought and the second one that I owned, behind the 2037 engine that I got when I was 5 years old.  

I am attaching the five pages in Service Supplements that CW had a link to in his post. The first supplement is over 500 pages long, there is an index in the front section that you can refer to to find info for other equipment.    I have also uploaded the pages for the tender.

Regarding the tender,  I recall that the foam will BREAKDOWN OVER TIME AND WILL EVENTUALLY SHORT OUT THE SOUND BOARD WHICH ARE HARD IF NOT POSSIBLE TO REPLACE! SO THE BEST RECOMMENDATION THAT I HAVE READ ON THE FORUM IS TO REPLACE THE FOAM WITH FOAM TAPE OF SOME SORT.

 There is also this book which is rather expensive, I don't have it, but i think the service supplements contain the same basic info.

This one I'm not as familiar with. I know it's basically a 700E but does it have a 700E motor or a 773 type motor?

I also have several accessories in need of repair but am unable to find replacement parts for them (#6-2313 Floodlight tower comes to mind, although it's just connections and bulbs, I can't find any repair info or parts lists for it).

Can anyone shed some light on the topic?

If you look in the Modern era manual's updated index (Supplement 17), you would see that your 2313 light tower is covered in chapter 14. I found it in the base manual.
It does get hard to find things when they are in the supplements.

There are pages on the Hudson too.

By the way, Lionel tweaked lots of parts as they reactivated postwar items in the modern era. Parts are not always interchangeable.

Yah, the Olsens site is a bit wonky. I have a terrible time with it when on my Mac. I usually have to Tab to get to the fields to type into, somehow the clicks don't line up with where my curser is.

I believe if you goto supplement # 17 first it has a index of them all so you can find which one you need to fine your engine.

Thanks very much for including the pdf on the 3100! Just as I suspected many of the parts (motor, E-Unit among others) have a base number of "8002" so getting replacement parts someday may not be a simple matter of using 736 PW parts...that's the info I was hoping to find and file for future reference and to pass on with the trains.

I just modified my original post and included the service manual pages for the tender.  I have read on the OGR Forum more than a few times that the foam that holds the sound board in place will break down over time and will result in the sound board shorting out.  This is not unique to the 3100 but will occur in all of the tenders that have the Sound of Steam.

1 - There are something like 47 supplements. Obviously the index on supplement 17 won't have anything on supplements issued afterwards.

2 - The index in supplement 17 assumes that the user has hard copies of everything, and merged the supplement pages into the main manual.

- There is a lot of material in that modern era manual / supplements, but sometimes it takes some work to find the information.

My suggestion: download everything.
Fortunately, each supplement has a table of contents.
Look through them to get an idea of what is available.

Oh, interesting about the foam breaking down!

I'll be sure to PM that. Reminds me of a 22 year old car I just got rid of...weather stripping, seat cushioning, foam-backed floor mats...all disintegrating into dust!

Success!! I found the 700E 1-8005 in supplement 20! Thank goodness for fast download speeds.  I panicked when I saw that supplement 1-9 was 500 pages long...just as Dave B said. At least I didn't try to print it out.
