I recently finished my first locomotive repaint, and I'd like to see if anyone else out there has any custom paint jobs they would like to share.

A few years ago I acquired a 1946 Lionel 2020 turbine. It required a bit of restoration work and the original paint was mostly gone. After restoring the engine to working order and stripping the old paint remnants, I decided to have some fun with it and I decided to give this engine my own fictional P.R.R. livery to match my 1970s Broadway Limited Passenger cars. Having recently added the final finishing touches, I am very pleased with the results and would like to share my work.1514699846116126800296915146998888791115272460IMG_20171231_005940IMG_20171231_005959IMG_20171231_010005

Now that I got the ball rolling, I'd like to see your locos!

Here's a Flyer K5 I rescued from a junk box.  Repainting it gave me the opportunity to install a can motor, LED headlight and get rid of die cast parting lines in the casting.

After cleaning and polishing of the side rods with an automotive polish (Wenol):

It's amazing how much detail is seen once the thick paint is removed.

I would like to post a photo but have no idea what the keyboard shortcuts to paste are.

Brian,

Just copy a photo (I press Ctrl + C) and then put the cursor where you want to paste and press Ctrl + V.  The photo will be embedded in the text.  At least that works for me on my PC.  Similar on a Mac. But substitute "command" for Ctrl.  Looking forward to your photos!

First, a clarification, I did not paint this.  I did however have the good sense to buy it when I saw it.  It is a repainted Lionel 520.

Here's a similar one in  Standard Gauge one. As you probably guessed I like the NH railroad. I'm slowly selling my O gauge items such as the one above and moving to standard.

I guess I should probably list the green one that is seen in the picture above.

A Lionel PW 2333 NYC pair AA that were very badly chipped in the paint, now are MP F3 motive power.  The Burlington F3s were some "throw away" St Fe AAs, now restored to pull my K Line CZ  21in cars.  With both units powered with dual AC Pulmor motors, and the E units tethered together, they have no problem pulling the 13 extruded aluminum cars. No, I cannot take credit for these fine repaints.Lionel Post 2333 MoPac F3 AA customLionel Post shells repaint Burlington 158 by Len Carparelli 7-15-2016But they do add two necessary lines I did not have before.

That's awesome! Tell me how you put that together! Looks like possibly a few prewar and postwar prairie engines went into this?

Well thanks! I had two 1666 shells, one had a bad front, the other a bad rear. Out came the hacksaw and JB Weld.

That last one is pretty cool! I'm assuming you were going for this:GG1-2Good job on that!

Semi scale or not; someone had to

Nairb, you might see your pictures, but I dont, and many others dont either. It's because your photos are still on your system and not hostable from there as is. They are not downloaded to ogrf yet. I.e., the copy paste doesn't work for everyone and you need to upload the picture to ogrf.

Start a post/reply by clicking in the composer box (Sometimes I need to type a letter for Android to get noticed) On an Android you may have to go to desktop mode in the browser and or tilt to horizontal/landscape veiw, but in the lower right, in the blue of the text tool, in dark blue text, a paperclip & "attachment tool" appears (and at the same time a composer toolbar appears up top...if your browsers desktop veiw works right). Click it, find the photo and choose it. While it is loading, more can be chosen. Wait for loading, wait for processing. When done, consider checking "insert into text large size", then finish. Wait for pics to actually load (video takes longer) and there is a data limit per post, I forget exactly, but about 30 sec of video, otherwise you have to host it elsewhere and link (auto) or embed (tool at the top)  If you didn't check " insert as large" you have to set the cursor and choose the size manually for each picture (in blue, with each photo, "insert" is listed at the bottom.)

If you don't insert the photos in the text, they may not be viewable for some people. Clicking the photo to open the photo browser doesn't always work for everyone

The #635 is stock, but I created the #7003 for a set.

The #624 is stock, so I made the #405.

This is one of my few successful attempted at printing decals on white paper with a background to match the loco paint.

I don't have this one any more – but I still like the way it turned out.

If I could do this one over again, I'd use lighter paint colors.

The #325 turned out great; the #301 was quite a challenge, and, in the end, the yellow band is too wide.

Made from old Kusan shells.

A good friend of mine passed away about a year ago so when I was on a visit to the mainland I visited his old layout. His daughter showed me around for one last look. I saw an engine I painted for him sometime in the late 70's. He had wanted a 1776 engine so I painted him one. I forgot I had done it for him. This is it. DonIMG_1701
