Hope this belongs here.... Going to put a 10' train shelf above my O gauge layout on a bare wall. On it will sit either a freight or passenger consist with engine. Probably only 6 or 7 cars.  What do you consider to be the optimal height for such a display?

Kids can not access it regardless of how high it is placed, so that is NOT a consideration. Viewing distance would be 3 to 4 feet at one end to 8 to 10 feet at the far end. (side wall of layout)

The train table (layout) is about 39 inches off the floor. On the wall where the shelf would be there are NO tall buildings.

Your opinion appreciated. Pictures helpful!

Michael,

Since we moved and I have no layout here as my club is 3 miles away, I built 1x4 shelving from floor to ceiling in 2 different locations. Our ceilings are 9 foot so floor to ceiling packed with trains is awesome looking.

You can safely display your trains on the walls making shelving that will support the weight of some of your steamers and diecast diesels.
