I have a cure for the box cost problem. Get your wife to do her shopping on Amazon. She receives more than enough to cover the several boxes a week that I ship, so I always have a good choice of box sizes.
Usually I have used boxes to ship items. The wife works where she can get a lot of boxes from deliveries. Once I didnt have a box that I needed in An odd size. Went shopping to a walmart on a Sunday and workers were unpacking goods to display. They had a whole cart full of empty boxes. Asked if I could have one and they said sure, take what you like. There you go if a walmart his nearby.
