Yes, I made it from a soup can with foamboard front & back.  There are some finished pics on the Scenery forum under junkyards/ wrecking yards.  Sorry I'm not sure how to post a link.

These are some cool UFOs!  I packed mine up, but maybe its time for an invasion!!

Here's a few shots of a work in progress.  The saucer is the ship from Forbidden Planet with animated lighting effects added to it and the surrounding scene. The processor board running it can be controlled from TMCC. The modified Lionel gateman also has animated lighting effects and contains an alien but is not connected here. Some of the Lionel cars have been modified with additional lighting. There is RGB LED strip lighting above the scene that can be set to any color - I was playing and had it a little too purple in some of these shots.   I plan to add some Forbidden planet style backdrops on the white wall behind everything.

These guys got their hands on a couple of Lionel phantom shells and a Williams GP9 chassis for power.....said they would have preferred steam.

They seem to get along just fine with the locals (who are a little strange in their own way!):

They also pop up in other places occasionally:

Pete, that is a beautiful model of the C57D.  May I ask who is the manufacturer?

One of my favorite movies.....I even have the 1/6th version of Robbie the Robot!

The model is really nice and can be found by googling  C57D.  my version was maufactured by Polar Lights.

Hope this was helpful,

-Pete

Thanks! I didn't realize Polar Lights had reintroduced that 1/72 kit back in 2009.  I Just ordered one off Amazon.  The one on my layout was bought back around 2005-6 when the Polar Lights kit was unavailable.  It was a very simple kit from a small garage company with no where near the detailing and nothing inside (though it was also half the price).

I agree - it's one of my favorite movies of all time.  Compared to other films of the time (of which there are many great ones), it's amazing how well the effects,  cinematography and story in this film have stood the test of time.

Cheers,

Jim

I never thought about putting one of the Phantom car shells onto a power chassis. Great idea! I've been customizing the Phantom engine but this is another great way to improve the pulling power.

The orange windows are interesting too.  Was that a customization or was there a version of the Phantom car available with that color windows?

Jim, you will enjoy putting this model together.  Just a quick recommendation before you get the model from Amazon.......there are a few "how to videos" on you tube you should watch........and pick up some small clamps......once you start putting the shell together, you will realize the more clamps the better to keep the two shell halves tight and prevent warping.

Jim,

The Phantom shells were a lucky under-the-table-junkbox find at York a few years ago.

They didn't have the window inserts so I just made some frames from strip styrene for the non-powered car and left them open so the aliens could catch the breezes.

Orange Plexiglas was used for the powered unit, one large sheet on each side with some cut squares added for interest. A couple of extra lights were also added to the Williams diesel frame.

Jim

Jim,

They look great!  Amazing how some of the best stuff seems to come out of the junk boxes under the table!  I really need to get to York sometime.  I'm from Baltimore but haven't been back to the area for 15 yrs.  I go to all our local swap meets here in NM but after 10-12 years, the same boxes under the same tables usually seem to have the same junk I've already picked thru.

Cheers,

Jim

We did two stories on UFO's in Run 271 of OGR, the June/July 2014 issue. George Brown reviewed the Lionel LionChief Area 51 Set beginning on Page 29.

Starting on Page 55, John Ciccarelli shows you how he built the Southwestern diorama for the Area 51 set, including a genuine lighted UFO, with aliens and cows even, that  he got from Scenic Express. The story also has a concise background section on the real Area 51 and why it is associated with little green men!

Lionel also used John's images in some of their materials.

It is amazing what you can find when you read O Gauge Railroading on a regular basis.

I totally want!  I loved the movie, as well as Forbidden Planet.  I have them both on DVD.  Maybe I'll find some time to watch them again in the next week or two...

When I get my layout built, there'll be several Daleks.  They fit great in my stock cars too.

The small War Machines are about 3 1/2" across wing tip to wing tip. The kit is made by Pegasus Hobbies #9202, 1/144, Special Plated Edition. The kit comes with 2 tanks and what they call a deathray. They also have a kit that is unpainted #9002. Mine is the plated version. FYI the large kit War Machine is 11" tip to tip. I got the light kit from voodooFx.com.

Paul,

Just think how well they would have sold to boys with figures of the girls included!

Altaria Morbius from Forbidden Planet? Judy Robinson from Lost in Space? Wow!

I'll second you on that one.  Before I retired, I was teaching Digital Animation and Rendering classes, and a CGI version of the CI Martian War Machine was one of my demo projects.  It was always popular, but most of my students had never seen the original comic.

BTW, I should add that the Classics Illustrated cover was done by the (recently deceased) prolific illustrator Lou Cameron, who was also a novelist:

I wore out several copies of WotW.  Alas, all my Classics Illustrateds got jettisoned when my family moved to the suburbs.

The BBC's Tripods (unfinished 1980's series) come in as a close second for magnificent three-legged machines:
