Lionel's Canadian Pacific Grain Train set was always a favorite. One of the last things to go before the move to NYC modelling only was final.
Matt, Very nice variety of cars.Sone sugar these days is shiped as liquid. Some sugar is shiped as granular to a small facility near the end use point and is liquified and trucked to the use point. Alot of CorN&Rice IS MOVED BY THE 100 TON CYLINDRICAL HOPPERS. Wheat Bran, Sugar, Salt and commidites with a poor angle of repose is shiped by the vertical side hopper cars. Very nice pictures you posted. Thanks for sharing with us.
Has anybody modeled the old "cardboard" door liner boxcar type of grain car/train?
I intended this CP train as a "show train" since in RL such a train would have all sorts of provincially-owned rolling stock and not just "Government of Canada"
In a similar vein is my longest grain train, this Chessie train built atop the 1988 Lionel set, now containing Lionel, K-Line, MTH and AtlasO stock, plus K-Line/Williams motive power:
Lastly is this train, also Chessie, comprised of the larger Weaver, MTH and AtlasO cars. Originally intended to be part of the train above, the over-40-car train proved to be too much for my 11x17 test track, resulting in its first stringline derailment. It now runs as a separate train, hauled by Williams SD45's. See if you can make out the block of four Weaver cars running with the plastic-wheeled trucks. Most of these cars were re-weighted to NMRA standards using lead shot and had tabs installed onto their body shells to keep the floors in place.

Here's one from a while back. I have a few more grain cars than I ran in the train, but haven't put them on rails yet because they aren't weighted. I've since acquired more Atlas Santa Fe PS4427's and a three-pack of Lionel CNW PS4427's.
Here's a video of a similar grain train I ran later in the year:
A Santa Fe export grain train lumbering past a remote New Mexico crossing in the early evening:
Excellent pictures & videos everyone. Here is my Canadian grain train with CN power up front.

colorado hirailer, I have not seen anyone doing that but in real life I have seen some animal feed places using old 20' intermodal containers to haul grain and then use a forklifr ro tip the container to pour the hrain out. Also in real life I xan well remember when say Corn can in box cars loaded into 100 lb cloth bags and after unloading a boxcar full of those sacks my arms would be bloody from that cloth rubbing on my arms all day. Boy do we have soft these days.
Most of the Lionel 3-bay ACF grain hoppers.
Here are various shots of my CN grain train with custom wide cab EMD units.
Come to think of it, these CN wide cab units are getting a bit old. It sure would be nice to have some NEW ones (MTH, Atlas. Lionel.. anybody!!)

Thanks again Rich!!!!
Scratchbuilder, Great looking 4 bay Grain Hopper. Very nice colors. Thank you for sharing with us.
Did you customize the Christopher Ranch car or pick it up somewhere? I live just up the road from there, and even did some work in one of their refrigerators one summer. Wouldn't mind having something like that!
Fred
Bill, I like your choices of Grain cars. The various Canadian cars add a lot to a grain consist. Also think your layout looks Great. Love the colors of toyr trees. The Hump yard hill is a nice added feature. Thanks for sharing with us.
